ReWire began with a team who visited a small band of churches and engaged with missional communities that cared for the poor.
The team realized that Christians in the American church are often removed from the poor, the very ones Jesus called us to serve. Transformation was needed in our churches, as well as in our cities. ReWire began and remains committed to this transformation.
Today, ReWire is located in multiple metropolitan cities across the U.S. Each team member has extensive
experience in ministry among the poor and spiritual formation.
In 2019, ReWire became a Religious Covenant Community. The structure of a Covenant Community, with clear rhythms and values, is an essential aspect of our work. It sustains our spiritual lives and directs our vision to create and sustain Kingdom Outposts.
Why Does ReWire Exist?
By JD Ward
When I was a kid, my family was in turmoil. My parents’ marriage was falling apart, and I was acting out in ways that mirrored the chaos at home. Eventually, my parents separated. That’s when my mom began taking us to church every week. Over time, each of us committed our lives to Jesus. And, in a remarkable turn, my dad came back—both to our family and to faith—after connecting with an Associate Pastor who helped lead him to Christ.
This is why I’ve given my life to serve the Church.
Everything I’ve done has been a response of deep gratitude for what the Church gave me: healing, restoration, and purpose. It’s been a place of transformation and growth.
But my soul still longs for an entirely different more. Maybe yours does too.
Jesus told us that the secrets of the Kingdom have been given to us. I believe that the “more” we hunger for is buried in that promise. And yet, for many Christians, the Kingdom of God feels vague—distant. Our connection to Jesus often lacks the intimacy and power we were meant to experience.
ReWire was born out of that tension.
I love the Church. But I grieve how shallow our connection with Christ can be—and how little transformative impact we often have in the world.
Every human heart carries a deep longing:
To be connected to God.
To find a people to whom we belong.
To engage in work that truly matters.
The Church was given to fulfill all of these needs in and through Jesus Christ.
We are called to union and intimacy with God, to be a community of shalom in a broken world, and to serve God’s Kingdom agenda all the days of our lives. And while many of us have tasted glimpses of this in the Church, most of us also carry stories of falling short of that beautiful vision.
For years, I wrestled with how to bridge this gap. Then I encountered the Church of the Saviour in Washington, D.C. and discovered a new way of discipleship—what we now call Missional Spiritual Formation.
I began to see the Church not as an institution, but as a movement—one that flourishes in small, intentional communities where each person feels seen, valued, and called.
ReWire was established to create and sustain those kinds of communities.
We call them Kingdom Outposts.
Each Kingdom Outpost is made up of people committed to:
Contemplative prayer
Radical hospitality
Meaningful mission with the poor
It is our mission to launch, equip, and nurture Kingdom Outposts in cities across the country.
Through their faithful presence and collective testimony, my hope is that the Church might become a more faithful Bride—one that lives into its original design, embodies the life of Christ, and brings healing to the world.
