We all want a people to whom we belong.

“God is light; in him there is no darkness at all… if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another.” 1 John 1:5–7

In a sermon a handful of years ago, pastor and author Peter Rollins described love in a way unlike anything I had heard before.

“Love is like light,” he said, before elaborating. Light is most definitely something that we can see. We know when it is present. But, you can’t point at light and say, “there it is” as if it is an object you can hold in your hand.

We know light is present by what it illuminates. Its nature is outward-facing. Whatever it touches becomes visible, distinct, and called into being. In a dark room, light brings the table and chairs forward, serving them by revealing their presence.

Love is like light. You know love by what it reveals — and how.

Love is also hard to hold in your hand, yet its presence is unmistakable. It draws out what is true and unique in another, bringing them to the forefront. Love helps someone be seen, known, and recognized as worthy of the attention love naturally offers.

Our longing to belong is twofold: we want a community that receives us in love—one that draws out who we truly are—and we also long to be the kind of people who draw others out, reveal them, and accept them. We are made to both give and receive love, and authentic community holds both together.

As we are drawn inward into communion with God, we encounter a love that reveals our dignity and belovedness. That same experience moves us outward. We long for community because we long for love—and the community we seek is formed as we give that love to others. When our love reveals another’s dignity and beauty, we cultivate the kind of place where our own can be revealed. Our belovedness is known as we help reveal the belovedness of others.
